Supporting widening participation medical students at the University of Edinburgh.

Medical school is about more than lectures, exams and clinical placements. It's about finding your place, building confidence, discovering your potential and becoming the doctor you want to be. At WP Medics, we believe that your background should never limit your opportunities or sense of belonging.

About Us

Widening Participation Medics is a University of Edinburgh student society dedicated to supporting medical students from widening participation backgrounds.

We recognise that students arrive at medical school with different experiences, opportunities, responsibilities and support networks. While getting into medical school is a significant achievement, navigating life as a medical student can bring its own challenges.

Our society exists to help ensure that a student's background does not negatively impact their medical school experience.

We aim to create a welcoming environment where students can connect with others, share experiences and feel supported throughout their journey.

What does WP mean?

WP stands for widening participation. It describes efforts to address barriers to higher education and support students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in university study.

Who is the society for?

Our society focuses on supporting widening participation medical students at the University of Edinburgh.
Please refer to our University of Edinburgh page for eligibility information: https://student-recruitment.ed.ac.uk/widening-participation/edinburgh and https://admission-checker.is.ed.ac.uk

This may not encompass all students we believe are WP (e.g. Mature and Postgraduate Students), we are working on this, but still contact us!

Do I need to share my personal experiences to get involved?

No. You should feel welcome to participate in a way that feels comfortable for you. Sharing personal experiences should always be your choice.
